Welsh Language Policy

Newbridge Memo has an obligation to ensure our support and relationship with the Welsh Language is upheld. As a venue in the heart of the Welsh Valleys we have a responsibility to the people in Wales who should be able to live their lives and experience arts and culture through the medium of Welsh if they choose to.

Newbridge Memo support the principle that Welsh should be treated no less favourably than English, and everyone in Wales should be able to access the full range of cultural experiences and services through the medium of Welsh.

  • Policy Statement

This policy sets out Newbridge Memo’s commitment to further the objectives of the Welsh Language Act 1993, the Welsh Language Measure 2011 and the relevant parts of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act 2015 and the Cymraeg 2050 Strategy, which aims to see a million Welsh speakers by the middle of the century.

Newbridge Memo acknowledges the Cultural Contract – the responsibility of organisations in receipt of public money to improve the bilingual services that individuals can expect to receive from public bodies and organisations and tackle barriers to access and participation, ensuring that cultural activities are accessible to all in Wales

  • Commitments

Newbridge Memo support the principle that Welsh should be treated no less favourably than English, and everyone in Wales should be able to access the full range of cultural experiences and services through the medium of Welsh.

This Policy sets out the steps we are taking to implement that principle in our work. In dealing with our audiences and other customers, we are trying to:

    ● Support the case for and the benefits of Welsh-speaking artists being free to work in the language of their choice so aim to improve the facilitation of this within the venue.

    ● Support and provide access to Welsh language classes for staff and volunteers to improve Newbridge Memo’s front of house and office Welsh Language provision

    ● Improve the number of Welsh Language speakers in the area through access to Welsh language classes for staff and volunteers, and Welsh Language learner events for audiences.

    ● Improve the ability for our customers, wherever possible, to use Welsh as freely as English in dealing with us

Newbridge Memo is an exciting, high quality, reputable venue based in South Wales, proud to be serving the valleys with top class entertainment, events, talks and much more. We are a Grade II and Grade II* Listed Building, a building with historical importance to the local community and the wider Welsh heritage.

To implement the above policy, the company operates a Welsh Language Action Plan which is updated annually and is available on request.
